Qatar has deposited its instrument of accession to Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL 73/78) under the 1997 Protocol.
The instrument was deposited during a meeting in London between HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud Al-Thani, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the United Kingdom and Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the International Maritime Organization, and HE Arsenio Antonio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization.
The two sides discussed the importance of Qatar's accession to Annex VI and its role in supporting international efforts to reduce air pollution from ships and strengthen protection of the marine environment.
They also reviewed cooperation between Qatar and the International Maritime Organization and exchanged views on matters of common interest in maritime transport.
The meeting additionally addressed current regional developments in the Strait of Hormuz and their impact on navigation, maritime transport and supply chains. The two sides stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and continuity of maritime navigation and international trade through vital waterways in accordance with international law.
