Moving to Doha, starting a job or bringing your family over? One of the first things to understand is your immigration category.
For most newcomers, the useful distinction is between visitor entry for a temporary stay, a work entry and residence route for employment, and a Family Residence Visa for dependants joining a resident.
These are not interchangeable. A tourist or visit entry does not give you permission to work or make you a Qatar resident, while the work and family-residence routes can lead to a residence permit and Qatar ID.
Here is how the main routes work, what they currently cost and where to apply.
Which Qatar visa do you need?
The quickest way to narrow it down is:
- Visiting Qatar for tourism or a short stay? Check whether your nationality qualifies for visa-free entry, visa on arrival or a Hayya e-visa.
- Taking up employment in Qatar? Your employer arranges the appropriate work-entry and residence procedures.
- Already working and residing in Qatar and want your spouse or children to live with you? Check whether you qualify to sponsor them for Family Residence.
- Want relatives to visit temporarily rather than move to Qatar? That is a Family Visit Visa, which is different from Family Residence.
Other residence categories also exist, so these are not the only ways to become a resident. They are simply the routes most relevant to employees and their families.
Qatar tourist and visitor entry explained
There is no single tourist “Entry Visa” that works the same way for every traveller.
Your route depends largely on your nationality and residence status.
Many travellers can enter Qatar without arranging a visa in advance. Others may qualify for a visa on arrival, while travellers who need an e-visa can apply through Hayya.
Hayya categories currently include options such as:
- Tourist Visa A1
- GCC Resident Visa A2
- Entry Visa A3 for eligible applicants based on their circumstances
The exact requirements can include passport validity, accommodation and return-travel conditions.
Some eligible travellers enter visa-free, while QAR 100 is the current fee for several visa-on-arrival categories. Always use the nationality checker before travelling rather than assuming the same conditions apply to everyone.
Can you work on tourist or visit entry?
No.
Tourist and visit entry is for the purpose under which it was issued. It does not authorise you to take employment in Qatar.
If you have accepted a job, your employer should arrange the correct work and residence process.
Family Visit Visa
A Family Visit Visa is also temporary, but it is different from a standard tourist entry.
It allows a Qatar resident who meets the requirements to sponsor eligible relatives for a visit.
The current MOI service provides an initial stay of one month. For first-degree relatives, it can be extended for up to another five months, subject to approval and the applicable requirements.
Current conditions include:
- The resident sponsor must have a non-labour profession.
- The sponsor must earn at least QAR 5,000 per month under an accredited employment contract.
- Proof of family accommodation is required.
- The relationship must be documented.
- The visitor must have health insurance covering the visit.
The current fee is QAR 200 for issuance, with an additional QAR 200 for each month of extension.
For visits longer than one month, MOI also requires the applicable medical procedure before extending the stay.
The application is handled through the Ministry of Interior’s services, including Metrash.
Qatar Work Visa explained
If you are moving to Qatar for employment, the process is mainly handled by your employer.
What people commonly call a “work visa” actually involves both permission to enter for employment and the subsequent residence and work-permit procedures.
Work Entry Visa
For standard company sponsorship, the employer applies for the Work Entry Visa.
The current government fee is QAR 300.
Requirements can include:
- Employment contract
- Attested educational qualifications where required for the profession
- Police-clearance documentation
- Required medical procedures
For workers whose recruitment is processed through a Qatar Visa Center, several steps can be completed before travel.
At the Qatar Visa Center, the employee may complete:
- Review and signing of the employment contract
- Medical examinations
- Fingerprints and other biometric information
The work visa is then processed following completion of the required procedures.
Residence permit and Qatar ID
After the immigration and employment procedures are completed, the employee receives a residence permit and Qatar ID.
For people who enter Qatar on a residence visa and still need to complete the process locally, MOI states that the medical examination should be completed within 30 days of entry. Fingerprints follow the medical process, after which the residence procedures are completed.
The Qatar ID is the main identification document used by residents for government and many private-sector services.
What does the work route cost?
For a standard company-sponsored employee, current official fees include:
- Work Entry Visa: QAR 300
- Work permit: QAR 100 per year
- Company-sponsored residence permit: QAR 1,000 per year
- Qatar ID: QAR 100
These are government fees in the company-sponsored process and are normally handled as part of the employer’s employment and immigration procedures.
Qatar’s Labour Law also prohibits licensed recruitment agencies from charging recruited workers recruitment fees or other recruitment-related charges.
If somebody asks you to pay a large fee simply to secure a job in Qatar, treat that as a warning sign.
Qatar Family Residence Visa explained
Family Residence is for eligible dependants who will live in Qatar, rather than simply visit.
A resident with a valid work residence permit can apply to bring eligible family members, including a spouse and children, subject to the current MOI requirements.
Once residence procedures are completed, sponsored family members receive their own Qatar IDs.
Current salary and employment conditions
The requirements differ between employment sectors.
For private-sector employees, the current rules require:
- A technical or specialised non-labour profession; and
- A salary of at least QAR 10,000 per month, or
- A salary of at least QAR 6,000 with family housing provided by the employer and recorded in the employment contract.
For government and semi-government employees, the current MOI service requires family housing from the employer or a salary of at least QAR 10,000, along with the required employment documentation.
This is considerably more specific than simply saying the requirement is “a few thousand riyals”.
Documents to prepare
Depending on the family member and application, the current requirements can include:
- Sponsor’s valid Qatar ID and residence permit
- Family member’s passport
- Attested marriage certificate
- Birth certificates or other proof of relationship
- Employment and salary documentation
- Proof of the required housing arrangement
- Police Clearance Certificate for family members aged 18 and above
- Health insurance
Foreign marriage and birth certificates should be prepared and attested correctly before the application, as missing documentation can delay the process.
How much does Family Residence cost?
The current MOI fee for the initial Family Residence Visa is QAR 200.
Residence and Qatar ID fees then apply when the residence procedures are completed. MOI currently lists a QAR 400 residence-permit fee for categories including accompanying family members.
Check the final amount shown in the MOI service when applying, as additional requirements may apply to the individual case.
Family Visit Visa vs Family Residence Visa
The difference is important.
Family Visit
Use this when a relative is coming temporarily.
It:
- Gives temporary permission to stay
- Does not create long-term residency
- Does not automatically issue a Qatar ID
- Does not authorise employment
Family Residence
Use this when an eligible spouse or child is moving to Qatar to live with the resident sponsor.
It:
- Creates legal residence after the process is completed
- Leads to a Qatar ID
- Requires the sponsor to meet employment, salary and housing conditions
A family member on residence sponsorship does not automatically have unrestricted permission to work. Employment requires the appropriate work authorisation.

Can you switch from a visit visa to residence?
Do not assume that you can.
MOI procedures include mechanisms for changing visa or residence status, but whether a particular visitor can complete a change inside Qatar depends on the original entry status, the new application, the sponsor and MOI approval.
If you enter as a tourist and later receive a job offer, the employer should check the correct immigration procedure before you begin work.
Likewise, if your spouse is already visiting Qatar and you later qualify for Family Residence, check the current MOI procedure before assuming the residence process can be completed without departure.
