The sixth Qatar Open Taekwondo Championship will begin Sunday at the Ladies' Sports Hall, organized by the Qatar Taekwondo, Judo and Karate Federation. The competition will continue through Wednesday, bringing together 1,152 male and female athletes from more than 46 countries across four age categories: cadets, juniors, youth and seniors.
The championship is classified as a G-1 event that awards world-ranking points and features 697 male and 455 female athletes, including more than 20 Olympic and world champions. Competitions will take place over four days in morning and evening sessions, covering 76 weight categories across the four divisions.
The cadet division includes 10 weight categories for boys and 10 for girls, while the junior division also comprises 10 categories for boys and 10 for girls. The youth division features 10 male and 10 female weight categories, while the senior division comprises eight categories each for men and women, with winners crowned daily.
Qatar will field six national-team athletes: Noor Mohammed, Maram Al Fetnasi, Widad Al Dosari, Ali Emam, Mohammed Ashraf and Mohammed Yassin Bali. A further 113 male and female athletes from local Qatari clubs will also participate.
In preparation for the championship, Qatar’s national-team athletes attended overseas training camps in Spain and Egypt, alongside domestic camps. They also participated in the Asian Games held in Japan.
The Qatar Taekwondo, Judo and Karate Federation also organized an international training camp in Doha from October 12 to 16, featuring the Olympic teams of Tunisia and Egypt, along with teams from Libya, Kuwait, Yemen, Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso, as part of the championship’s technical and physical preparations.
The camp was supervised by Olympic coaches from Egypt, Spain and Tunisia, with the aim of improving the athletes’ technical and physical readiness and providing an opportunity for technical interaction among participants before the competitions begin.
Federation Executive Director Adel Al Marzouqi confirmed during a press conference that preparations to host the championship had been completed. He said the organizational and technical arrangements had been finalized, including preparing the competition hall, receiving the delegations and providing accommodation requirements.
Al Marzouqi expressed his satisfaction with the strong participation in the current edition, which has surpassed the previous tournament. He said the championship had earned a strong international reputation because of the competitiveness of its contests and its importance in awarding athletes points that help improve their world rankings.
He noted that the success of the previous edition provides motivation to continue developing the championship while also presenting a challenge for the organizing committee to deliver an outstanding tournament from the technical, organizational and administrative perspectives.
Al Marzouqi said the participation of this number of national teams and athletes from around the world represents an important opportunity to develop technical standards and strengthen international exposure for athletes from GCC countries and the wider Arab world.
He also praised the broad Qatari participation, saying the presence of a large number of local male and female athletes at the event contributes to the sport’s development and expands its participation base in Qatar.
The Executive Director commended the success of the international training camp organized by the Federation ahead of the championship and its role in improving participants’ technical and physical readiness. He expressed hope that the sixth edition would achieve the desired success at every level and wished all male and female athletes the best of luck.
