Sony launches ECM-AX10 smartphone microphone for immersive 3D audio recording

Sony announced the launch of the ECM-AX10 microphone, which is dedicated to recording 3D audio using smartphones, targeting vloggers, filmmakers, and content creators using mobile phones.

The company said in a statement that the microphone includes a spherical module that contains four capsules to capture sound from multiple directions, to support Ampesonix recording and capture sounds from across the scene.

The device weighs approximately 24 grams and connects directly to compatible phones via the USB-C port, without the need for a separate recorder.

The Ampesonix recording works with Sony's Spatial Audio Video Tool app to support Eclipsa Audio publishing on YouTube. Dual-ear recording uses Sony's 3D audio technology, also used in 360 Reality Audio, to deliver an enhanced audio experience for headphones, even in environments that don't support Eclipsa Audio.

Stereo recording provides a versatile format for headphones and speakers.

According to the statement, Eclipsa Audio is an open-source technology for 3D audio, based on the IAMF audio standard, and is provided by the Open Media Alliance under an intellectual property duty-free license.

Using the microphone with the Spatial Audio Video Tool allows you to shoot videos, review footage, make simple adjustments, and then export content with 3D audio using a smartphone.

The microphone can also be used with general audio and video recording apps, as well as dedicated Sony apps.

The microphone is compatible with USB-C phones running iOS 18 or Android 14 and later.

The company explained that some functions, including video recording, editing, and exporting, require the installation of the custom app, and that the quality of the recording may vary depending on the phone's performance. It also noted that the devices not included in the list of compatible phones have not undergone OK checks.

The microphone was developed in collaboration between Sony and Sony BCL, a subsidiary of the group, which calibrated and tuned its sound by leveraging its post-production expertise.
