The instant messaging app WhatsApp, owned by Meta, announced the launch of a new security measure that prevents users from logging into the app if the operating systems on their devices are outdated, on Android and iOS, while instructing users to take the necessary steps to update their devices and continue using the application.
According to WABetaInfo, which specializes in tracking WhatsApp updates, the action is server-side and does not require the installation of a new version of the app, as it directs users to their device's settings to install the latest available OS update.
WhatsApp has not yet specified a list of versions whose users will be prevented from logging in.
This measure comes as part of enhancing the security of users, as devices running older operating systems may be vulnerable to exploitation due to known security vulnerabilities, which could allow attackers to install malware and access the data stored on them.
WhatsApp has gradually started rolling out the feature to specific Android and iOS user accounts, through a server-side update without the need to install a new version of the app.
