Qatar is experiencing the summer solstice today, June 21, marking the official start of astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere and bringing the longest day and shortest night of the year.
According to the Qatar Meteorology Department, the summer solstice occurs when the Sun reaches its northernmost position in the sky due to the Earth's axial tilt of approximately 23.5 degrees toward the Sun. This annual astronomical event typically takes place on June 20 or 21.
On the day of the solstice, the Sun rises from its farthest northeastern point and sets at its farthest northwestern point, resulting in the maximum number of daylight hours for the year. Noon shadows also appear at their shortest length.
Despite signaling the beginning of astronomical summer, the summer solstice does not necessarily correspond to the hottest day of the year. Temperatures often continue to rise in the weeks that follow as the land and atmosphere gradually absorb and retain heat.
The summer solstice is a significant astronomical event observed around the world and serves as a key marker in the seasonal calendar. Following the solstice, daylight hours in Qatar and across the Northern Hemisphere will gradually begin to decrease until the autumnal equinox in September.
