Mac users have been urged to install the latest available security updates after a critical vulnerability affecting the Screen Sharing feature in macOS was reported to be under active exploitation.
The security alert, classified as “Very High” risk, says Apple has released an update to address the vulnerability and recommends that users update their devices immediately.
What is the risk?
According to the alert, attackers have been observed exploiting the vulnerability to obtain root-level privileges, potentially giving them extensive control over affected Mac devices.
Attackers have also reportedly deployed malware that uses the computing resources of compromised devices to mine cryptocurrency.
Internet-connected devices are highlighted as being particularly exposed to exploitation.
What should Mac users do?
Users are advised to install the latest available macOS security release as soon as possible.
They are also encouraged to disable Screen Sharing whenever the feature is not required, reducing unnecessary exposure to potential attacks.
The warning applies to multiple macOS versions, including macOS Tahoe, macOS Sequoia and macOS Sonoma.
With the vulnerability already being exploited, users are encouraged not to delay installing available security updates and to review whether Screen Sharing needs to remain enabled on their devices.
