MoI Warns Residents to Verify Online Content as Deepfake Risks Grow

Ministry of Interior (MoI) has warned residents about the risks posed by deepfake technology, urging internet users to verify the source and credibility of digital content before trusting or sharing it.

In a digital safety advisory, the Ministry highlighted how artificial intelligence can be used to manipulate videos, imitate voices and impersonate individuals, making misleading content increasingly difficult to identify at first glance.

The central message from the Ministry is straightforward: not everything you see or hear is necessarily real.

What is a deepfake?

A deepfake is digitally manipulated or AI-generated content designed to make a person appear to say or do something they did not actually say or do.

The technology can be applied to video, images and audio. In some cases, AI-generated voices can closely resemble a real person, while manipulated videos can create convincing but false representations of individuals.

This can make it harder for users to distinguish genuine content from fabricated material without checking its original source.

MoI urges users to verify before sharing

The Ministry advised residents not to immediately trust content simply because it appears convincing.

Instead, users should check where the content came from and whether the source is credible before forwarding, reposting or acting on it.

This is particularly important when content involves unusual statements, urgent requests, financial instructions or messages that appear to come from a known individual or organisation.

Verifying information before sharing can also help limit the spread of misinformation and manipulated material online.
