British bestselling novelist and former politician Jeffrey Archer has died at the age of 86, his publisher HarperCollins has confirmed.
Archer died suddenly and peacefully at his home on Monday, October 5, between writing sessions, according to the publisher.
Over a writing career spanning around five decades, he became one of Britain’s most commercially successful novelists, selling more than 300 million books worldwide.
Author of ‘Kane and Abel’ and The Clifton Chronicles
Archer’s best-known works include Kane and Abel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less and the multi-book Clifton Chronicles series.
His first novel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, was published in 1976, beginning a career that would make his books international bestsellers.
His final novel, Adam & Eve, is scheduled for publication on October 6, 2026. Archer had previously confirmed that it would be his last novel after 50 years of writing.
Career in British politics
Before and alongside his literary success, Archer had a prominent career in British politics.
He was elected as a Conservative MP in 1969, later became deputy chairman of the Conservative Party and was made a life peer in 1992.
His political career was later overshadowed by a criminal conviction. In 2001, Archer was jailed for perjury and perverting the course of justice in connection with an earlier libel case. He was released early in 2003 and remained a member of the House of Lords until retiring in 2024.
Final book released after his death
Archer continued writing into his eighties and had described Adam & Eve as his final novel.
The book is being released one day after his death, bringing his five-decade career as a novelist to a close.
