QATAR RED CRESCENT SOCIETY LAUNCHES SURGICAL MEDICAL CONVOY FOR DISPLACED PATIENTS IN SUDAN

Qatar Red Crescent Society launched a multidisciplinary medical convoy in Sudan, comprising a volunteer medical team from Qatar, to perform surgeries for displaced and underprivileged patients at Bahri Teaching Hospital. The convoy is being implemented in cooperation with the Khartoum State Ministry of Health to support medical services, alleviate patients' suffering and shorten waiting lists.

The medical delegation from Qatar includes Dr. Mansour Ahmed Jaber, Senior Consultant in Paediatric Surgery at Sidra Medicine, and Dr. Siddiq Mohieldin Siddiq, Consultant in General Surgery at Hamad Medical Corporation. They will join senior Sudanese consultants to form a joint medical team covering general surgery, urology and paediatric surgery.

Over one week, the team aims to perform approximately 116 surgeries free of charge. During the convoy's preparatory phase, free clinics operated for three days to examine patients and select those most in need of surgical intervention. The programme also includes training for local medical personnel at Bahri Teaching Hospital to transfer expertise and improve the quality of healthcare.

Upon the delegation's arrival in Khartoum, it was received by officials from Qatar Red Crescent Society's representation office and the management of Bahri Teaching Hospital. The convoy began its work in the presence of Dr. Mahmoud Al-Badri, Minister of Health in Khartoum State, who praised its range of specialities and its direct role in supporting the capabilities of the hospital and the health sector.

The convoy forms part of Qatar Red Crescent Society's efforts to alleviate the severe deterioration of Sudan's health sector. The Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) indicates that approximately 14.7 million people face serious difficulties in accessing essential healthcare services.

Qatar Red Crescent Society also plans to launch a series of additional medical convoys and health projects in Sudan that will benefit more than 7,400 patients. These will include treatment for eye diseases, dialysis machines and supplies, cancer medicines and equipment for persons with disabilities, with a total budget exceeding QAR 8 million.
