As Qatar ramps up efforts to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the country's Cabinet has announced that the precautionary measures in place to protect the health and ensure the safety of citizens and residents will remain in effect.

This was confirmed at the Cabinet's regular meeting held yesterday via video conferencing technology.

Chaired by His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani the meeting reviewed and announced new precautionary measures.

The meeting commenced with an overview of the latest developments and efforts made by the country to curb the spread of COVID-19. HE the Minister of Public Health shared these updates with the Cabinet.

After the meeting, HE the Minister of Justice and Acting Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Dr. Issa bin Saad Al Jafali Al Nuaimi announced the highlights of the meeting.

He outlined the below:

-  All citizens and residents are obligated to install the EHTERAZ App on smartphones when leaving the house for any reason. This decision is effective from Friday, May 22, 2020, until further notice.  

-  All citizens and residents, upon leaving and moving, are obligated not to have more than two people in the vehicle, and a maximum of three persons are allowed in the following cases:

- Transportation in taxis and limousines.

- Transfer in private vehicles when driven by the user to the family.

- The ambulances and vehicles of the Ministry of Public Health and the security and military authorities are excluded.

- Consider what has been decided on reducing the number of people transported by buses to half the capacity of the bus, taking precautionary measures and measures.

This decision is effective from Tuesday, May 19, 2020, until further notice.

- The practice of sport shall be in the areas close to the residence area, taking into consideration avoiding gatherings during the exercise and taking the necessary precautions from wearing masks and leaving the safe distance. This decision is effective from Tuesday, May 19, 2020, until further notice.

- The Ministry of Interior shall take the necessary measures in this regard.

- Closing shops and stopping all commercial activities during the period from May 19-30, 2020, with the exception of food and catering shops, pharmacies, and restaurants that submit external requests, and the Ministry of Trade and Industry shall determine the other necessary activities exempted from this decision.

In the event of non-compliance with these decisions, the penalties stipulated in Decree-Law No. (17) for the year 1990 regarding the prevention of infectious diseases shall be applied to the violator by imprisonment for a period not exceeding three years and a fine not exceeding (QAR 200,000) two hundred thousand riyals or one of these two penalties.
