In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Member of the supervisory committee for the Shura Council elections Brigadier Abdul Rahman Majid Al Sulaiti advises citizens who meet the electoral conditions to register via the electronic platforms instead of going to the electoral headquarters.

Al Sulaiti pointed out that registering through electronic platforms is easier and safer considering that voters will be required to visit the electoral headquarters instead.

Citizens were allowed to begin registering for the first Shura Council elections which began yesterday in all electoral districts and will continue until August 5, 2021.

Brigadier Al Sulaiti further said, “After registration, you will receive a text message that your application has been received and that the preliminary lists will be announced on August 8, Sunday, while the final list will be announced on August 22.”

Regarding the announcement of candidatures, he said that it is premature as “the citizens should not announce their candidature in the current period until they have gone through the stages of the electoral process as planned. Everyone must register in the voters’ lists first.”

“The applications for registration of candidates will start on August 22, Sunday and will continue until August 26, Thursday, and that the final list of candidates will be announced on September 15,” he added.

He requested social media influencers to refrain from endorsing any candidate until the start of the electoral campaign, which will begin on September 15 and last until the day of the election. According to Al Sulaiti, a decree will be issued later to fix the voting day.

According to Brigadier Abdul Rahman Majid Al Sulaiti, electoral procedures were carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education to identify schools as appropriate headquarters for electoral districts, as well as with the Supreme Judiciary Council to select judges to lead election committees that would oversee the voting process and announce the results.

He also noted that precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus will be implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Public Health.
