The Cochin International Airport, which had been shut down due to incessant rains and flooding, is likely to reopen on August 26, it has been reported.

Direct flights from Doha to Kochi is expected to resume following the airport’s opening, reported Gulf Times.

With the flood waters rapidly coming down, Kerala’s busiest airport is expected to resume operations after 12 days of unprecedented shutdown.

The airport authorities had been engaged in a massive cleaning run of the operational area that had been submerged by flood waters, reported Qatar Tribune.

A side the compound wall of the airport had come crashing down after water from the swollen Periyar River and its tributaries entered the complex, turning it into a virtual sea.

The airport was first closed on August 9, for a few hours, and then again on August 15.

The airport was initially slated to resume operations at 2pm on August 18, but owing to the severity of the floods, it was deferred to August 26.

Qatar Airways, Air India Express, Jet Airways and IndiGo all operate direct flights between Doha and Kochi.

Qatar Airways has eaerlier rerouted its flights — QR516 and QR517 — between Doha and Kochi, to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport until August 25.
