With Qatar undergoing the second COVID-19 wave and a noticeable increase in the number of daily cases and hospital admissions, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has announced the launch of a new field hospital to tackle the situation and meet any future rise in demand for hospital beds.

Formed as a permanent structure at Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital, this new field hospital provides an extra 100 acute beds to manage patients with COVID-19.

According to HMC, the new field hospital will provide additional surge capacity for patients in the event of future pandemics for emergencies.

The hospital will not only support Qatar’s immediate response to COVID-19 but also serve as an important facility to be used later with additional capacity that may be opened as needed to meet any future health crises.

The materials used for the construction of the field hospital have been sourced and engineered from Qatar, HMC highlighted.

HMC’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Abdulla Al Ansari, explained the role of the hospital in enhancing HMC’s ability to address increased demand due to the second COVID-19 wave.

“With the opening of 100 new beds in the second phase of the Field Hospital, 252 beds are now operational to care for COVID-19 patients, with more than 500 patients having already received care in the first phase of the Field Hospital,” he said.

A third phase of the field hospital is set to be finished in two weeks, Dr Al Ansari mentioned.

This will boost total capacity to 374 beds, he said, adding that the majority of these are single rooms with full oxygen support.

“This increased capacity will ensure that anyone requiring hospital admission due to COVID-19 will be admitted without delay to receive expert care from our dedicated clinical teams,” he said.

According to HMC’s Chief of Healthcare Facilities and Acting Chief of Business Services Hamad Al Khalifa mentioned that efforts have been made to make sure patients have everything they need in each room, such as individual charging points, lighting control and temperature control.
