The second day of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2018 at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex proved to be one of huge upsets, with seeded stars falling like ten-pins.
The second and third seeds, Spanish World No.10 Pablo Carreno Busta and Czech Tomas Berdych were sent packing home in the opening round, reported Qatar Tribune.
Busta, who arrived in Doha with a lot of promise, was the first to fall. Unseeded Croat Borna Coric stunned the 26-year-old in a two hour, 41-minute battle on the centre court.
The second match on the same court saw Berdych being handed a return ticket by Germany’s World No. 53 Jan-Lennard Struff after a two hour and eight minute match.
Berdych lost 4-6, 6-1, 6-7 (4). Busta went down fighting 7-5, 2-6, 6-7 (8).
Coric was thrilled with the big win.
“This is a huge win, for sure. Especially, since it was the first match of the season. I normally don’t start the season very well, so I’m very happy. I’ll take that,” he said.
Coric next faces Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (World No. 59) in the second round.
Meanwhile, 8th seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez survived a scare against compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Feliciano won the three-set battle 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (3) and will now meet Bosnian qualifier Mirza Basic next.
