The National Sports Day Committee unveiled details of the new edition of National Sports Day 2027, scheduled to take place across the country next February and, for the first time, during the holy month of Ramadan under the theme “Ramadan Is an Opportunity.” The events aim to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and establish sport as a way of life, helping improve public health and encourage healthy, sustainable lifestyles.
Details of the upcoming edition and its new identity were announced during a press conference held at Lusail Sports Hall, attended by representatives of partner entities. The committee outlined the direction of the events and programmes, which aim to encourage all segments of society to exercise and use the atmosphere of the holy month to increase physical activity and adopt healthy behaviours.
The theme “Ramadan Is an Opportunity” reflects the committee’s aim to establish sport as part of a daily routine that can be maintained throughout Ramadan. This supports public health and encourages community members to make positive and sustainable changes to their physical-activity habits.
Abdulrahman bin Muslim Al-Dosari, Advisor to the Minister of Sports and Youth and Chairman of the National Sports Day Committee, said the national occasion is an important opportunity to raise public awareness of sport and its role in improving quality of life. Holding the upcoming edition during Ramadan offers an opportunity to encourage people to reorganise their daily habits and incorporate physical activity into their lifestyles during the holy month, he added.
Al-Dosari explained that sport is not merely a temporary practice or an activity linked to a particular occasion, but a decision that reflects awareness and a sense of responsibility towards oneself and society. He noted that National Sports Day helps establish a culture of regular physical activity as a foundation of health and quality of life.
He added that the committee continues working to broaden community participation through initiatives and events targeting all segments of society. This aligns with Qatar’s vision of building a healthy, active and sustainable society and strengthening its ability to confront health challenges associated with modern lifestyles.
He noted that National Sports Day was launched under the Amiri Decision issued in 2011, designating the second Tuesday of February each year as National Sports Day. It has become an established national occasion that reflects the place of sport in Qatari society and the state’s commitment to human health and better quality of life.
He said the occasion embodies the State of Qatar’s commitment to promoting a culture of sport and physical activity in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, particularly in human development, public health and building a healthy and active society.
For the upcoming edition, events will be held in public parks, along walking and running tracks, and at sports facilities and venues across the country. This will allow community members to take part in physical activities at suitable locations close to where they live.
The programme includes a wide range of sports and activities, including walking, running, fitness exercises, team games, football, basketball, tennis and taekwondo, as well as cycling and swimming. It will also feature competitions and sporting and recreational activities catering to different age groups and physical abilities.
Nasser Ahmed Al-Khori, Director of the Public Relations and Communication Department at the Ministry of Public Health, stressed the importance of National Sports Day in raising awareness of physical activity and its role in promoting public health and preventing disease. He called for continued efforts to make sport a way of life rather than merely a seasonal activity.
He explained that the Ministry of Public Health’s participation forms part of its role in promoting health awareness and encouraging sustainable healthy behaviours. Health teams will be present at event sites to provide health support and help ensure participants’ safety.
The upcoming edition is expected to draw broad community participation across the country, further establishing National Sports Day as a national occasion that promotes a culture of physical activity and supports efforts to build a healthier, more active society. It will also make use of Ramadan’s distinctive character to encourage people to continue exercising and adopt healthy habits throughout the year.
