Qatar considers food security a top priority, given it is one of the most important issues, said His Excellency the Minister of Municipality and Environment Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie yesterday.

HE the Minister was speaking at the opening ceremony of the second annual Conference on Food Security by Al Arab.

Food security has many aspects, as it is connected to both the agricultural and the industrial sectors, he said.

Qatar's strategy will focus on producing items in which the country has a comparative advantage. Such items include fresh produce, dairy, dates, red meat, poultry, eggs, and fish.

The other element of the strategy is to build a strategic stock of the most crucial products that are not produced locally, most important of which is wheat, sugar, rice, and cooking oil, he highlighted.

HE Al Subaie said that holding a second edition of the conference reflects the commitment of everyone in Qatar to the country's food security.

He also spoke about the projects related to the private sector, under the directives of HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.

Some of the projects include producing vegetables in greenhouses, egg farms, fish and shrimp farms in addition to others that support livestock such as fodder and organic fertilizer.

These projects will help achieve self-sufficiency from high-quality agricultural products, and to build up a strategic stock with cheap prices.

Another main goal is to reach optimum levels of production that would reflect on the growth of the agricultural sector.

The minister acknowledged the great progress Qatar has made over the past two years to increase the level of self-sufficiency in agricultural products.
