Hamad Medical Corporation has launched a new specialized clinic at Hamad General Hospital for cancer patients who require repeated intravenous treatments. The clinic assesses patients' needs and determines the most appropriate treatment method according to each patient's condition and treatment plan.
The clinic combines oncology and vascular surgery expertise through coordination between the National Center for Cancer Care and Research and the Vascular Surgery Department at Hamad General Hospital. This provides an integrated assessment of patients' intravenous-treatment needs and supports advance planning and follow-up throughout the different stages of treatment.
The clinic offers a specialized pathway for assessing cases, selecting the most appropriate option and monitoring each patient's health needs and treatment type. This helps medical teams plan for patients' requirements and avoid unnecessary delays or difficulties during treatment.
Dr. Mohammed Salem Al Hassan, Medical Director and CEO of the National Center for Cancer Care and Research and Chairman of Cancer Services at Hamad Medical Corporation, said the organization remains committed to developing cancer-care services around patients' changing needs. He said the clinic provides specialized care for an important challenge that some patients may encounter and strengthens coordination among the medical specialties involved in their treatment.
Dr. Al-Harith Al-Khater, Head of Oncology, Palliative Care and Urgent Care Services at the National Center for Cancer Care and Research, said some patients require intravenous treatments for extended periods and their needs may change as treatment continues. He explained that the clinic enables teams to evaluate those needs early and address them within the patient's treatment plan.
Dr. Hassan Ali Saud Al Thani, Head of the Trauma, Vascular, and General Surgery Department at Hamad General Hospital, stressed the importance of maintaining suitable venous access, particularly for patients receiving repeated intravenous treatments. He said the new pathway allows cases requiring specialized assessment to be addressed promptly and supports decisions about venous-access options according to each patient's needs.
One patient said difficulties accessing a vein before chemotherapy had sometimes required repeated attempts to insert a needle, causing pain, discomfort and anxiety. After the patient was referred to the clinic, the team listened to the concerns, explained the appropriate option and answered questions in coordination with the vascular surgery team. The patient said receiving medication became easier and more comfortable after a suitable catheter was inserted.
