The winners of the Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Awards were feted in a glittering ceremony at the Putrarajya Square in Malaysia yesterday.

HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamed and UN Secretary-General’s Representative and UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Executive Director Yury Fedotov jointly gave away the awards, reported Gulf Times.

The Malaysian Prime Minister congratulated Qatar for organising such an important event and thanked the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime for its complete support.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee of the Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award for choosing Putrajaya, Malaysia, as the venue for this year’s ceremony. This event being organised here is an important recognition from the international community on our efforts in combatting corruption in Malaysia,” Dr Mohamed was quoted as saying by The Peninsula.

HH The Amir and the Malaysian premier earlier unveiled the Anti-Corruption Monument, shaped like a hand of steel and symbolising all countries around the world uniting to combat corruption, in Kuala Lumpur.

The geometrical configurations of the monument represent the combined efforts of all nations in stopping corruption. Spaces in the monument represent transparency. This is the third monument of its kind and by far, the biggest.

Qatar’s Attorney General and President of International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities HE Dr Ali bin Fetais Al Marri said the award was constituted in the hopes of strengthening anti-corruption movement around the world

“Through this prize, HH The Amir wishes to send a message to those who fight corruption everywhere in the world that there’re those who stand with you, there’re those who see your work, there’re those who’ll take your hand to give you an example to follow. You’re those who can save your country from falling into the trap of corruption,” he was quoted as saying by Qatar Tribune.

He said the war on corruption could be won only when those fighting believe that it can be won.
“The corrupt cannot fight corruption. Unless you find a leader who believes in the elimination of corruption, you won’t win, no matter how hard you fight,” he said.

The inaugural award function in 2016 was held in Vienna and the second was held a year later in Geneva at the United Nations Headquarters.
