Qatar has been gunning to improve its water security for some time now.

Come December 11, and the country will take an essential step towards that goal, with the launch of the Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project at the pumping stations in the Umm Salal area, reported Gulf Times.

The Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa), said the QR14.5bn project would be implemented in four regions in Qatar — Umm Salal, Al Thumama, Rawdat Rashed and Umm Biraka.

The capacity of the project currently stands at 960m gallons of water but is set to increase to 2,300m gallons by the end of the first phase, reported The Peninsula.

The Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project is one of the largest of its kind in the world.

The reservoirs are being built along with integrated pumping stations including more than 650km of interconnecting water pipelines.
