The Lusail Expressway, once fully complete, is set to totally transform the face of Qatar’s transportation sector. Understandably, due diligence has been given to every aspect of its development.

It now seems to have paid rich dividends as the project has been chosen as the Global Best Project in the Roads/Highways category of the 2018 Engineering News Record (ENR) Award, according to Gulf Times.

The ENR Awards are given out after taking into account a project’s innovation, safety and performance. Judges also considered how the project has benefited the local community.

The panel of judges, who are industry experts in evaluating road projects, went through 23 projects from 14 different countries before zeroing in on Lusail Expressway as the winner, reported The Peninsula.

Eng Youssef Al Emadi, Manager of the Highway Department, received the award in a ceremony held in New York City.

The Lusail project had reconfigured 6km of urban roadways into a free-flowing expressway in Doha. It links the old Doha city centre to the vibrant Lusail City/Pearl Development residential communities.

Construction work included the creation of three major grade-separated interchanges, road tunnels, underpasses and flyovers and two marine bridges. The network is crowned by a signature, 103M-high, double-arch monument that towers above one of the more complex intersections, according to Qatar Tribune.

The five-year project consumed around 75,000 tonnes of steel and 345,000 tonnes of asphalt. About 6km of utility corridors were constructed to integrate electricity and telecommunication networks within the route.

More than 5,000 workers from 26 different countries completed more than 63m labour hours, with a lost-time injury rate of 0.03.

The ENR is an international organisation based in New York and specialises in evaluating engineering projects worldwide.
