The illegal siege of Qatar has pushed the country to make self-sufficiency in food a top priority project.

Given Qatar’s small physical area, the country has been thinking out of the box to make things work. For example, they have been flying in cows from different parts of the world to improve its self sufficiency in milk.

Similarly, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) recently signed a contract with Al Qamra Holding Group to set up fish farms in floating cages in the sea in Qatar’s northern regions, reported Qatar Tribune.

The project, which is a first-of-its-kind initiative, is expected to provide 2,000 tonnes of high quality fish every year.

Besides economical importance, the project is also expected to help preserve the fishery stock. The project is aiming at taking care oif around 87% of Qatar’s annual fish needs within 18 months.

The project will start producing 500 tonnes of fish by the end of 2018 and will reach its full capacity by March, 2019.
