The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) in cooperation with environmental activist, Khalifa Saleh Omar Al-Hamidi, announced its third rescue operation for dugongs in the Khor Al Adaid area. The Qatari environmentalist reported the third baby dugong stranding incident this month and the Ministry immediately took appropriate action.

MoECC released the news on their website as well as through their socials about the rescuing of the third baby dugong, who is named ‘Olivia’.

Necessary measures were taken to safeguard Olivia and she was immediately transported to Fuwairit beach area, which is also home to the Sea Turtle Project. Olivia was treated for her superficial wounds, given proper first aid care and then released into equipped ponds adjacent to two other rescued baby dugongs, ‘Ocean’ and ‘Oscar’. Ocean was discovered earlier this month on July 5, and Oscar was also rescued on July 23. Olivia is the third dugong to be rescued and rehabilitated this month.

The Ministry has released a statement that after ensuring round-the-clock care and first aid to the rescued dugongs, the animals shall be re-released in their original living areas after deeming them able to reply on themselves.
