Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has shared a set of food safety recommendations for residents when dining out, along with guidance on what to do if symptoms of food poisoning occur.

The advice highlights simple precautions diners can take before and during a meal to reduce the risk of consuming unsafe food.

What to check when dining out

The Ministry advises residents to choose restaurants carefully and pay attention to general hygiene standards before eating.

Diners should make sure that the restaurant environment and eating utensils appear clean and well maintained.

Food should also be checked before consumption. The Ministry advises against eating any item that shows noticeable changes in its colour, smell or taste, as these may indicate that the food is no longer safe to consume.

Residents should also avoid food that appears to have been improperly preserved or stored, particularly if there are signs that appropriate food safety conditions may not have been maintained.

What should you do if you suspect food poisoning?

People who experience symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea or stomach pain after eating are advised to seek medical attention.

The Ministry also recommends keeping any leftover food, if possible, as it may help health professionals or authorities identify the possible source of the poisoning.

Symptoms of food poisoning can vary depending on the cause, but seeking medical advice is particularly important when symptoms are severe, persistent or worsening.

How to report food safety violations in Qatar

Residents who notice food safety violations can report them by contacting 16000, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

The guidance forms part of the Ministry’s wider efforts to encourage safe food practices and help consumers recognise potential risks when eating outside the home.

By checking restaurant hygiene, paying attention to the condition of food and acting quickly when symptoms occur, diners can take practical steps to protect their health while eating out in Qatar.
