Qatar’s Ministry of Interior has issued a public safety reminder urging residents and visitors to maintain safe distances from oil and gas facilities, pipelines and related infrastructure.
The Ministry said maintaining a safe distance and following safety signs helps protect members of the public, employees working at the facilities and Qatar’s vital infrastructure.
Stay 500 metres away from offshore facilities
The Ministry advised boats and other marine users to maintain a distance of at least 500 metres from offshore oil and gas facilities.
It said respecting the exclusion distance helps improve safety at sea while protecting both facilities and those working at them.
Qatar law also prohibits unauthorised vessels and individuals from approaching maritime petroleum and gas installations within 500 metres.
Fishing and leaving fishing equipment within the same 500-metre zone around maritime facilities are also prohibited.
Keep away from oil and gas pipelines
For oil and gas transmission and distribution pipelines and their associated stations, the Ministry also advised the public to maintain a distance of at least 500 metres.
People should follow warning signs and safety instructions displayed around oil and gas infrastructure and avoid entering restricted areas.
The reminder is particularly relevant for people travelling, camping or carrying out outdoor activities near energy infrastructure.
Camping rules also include safety distances
Qatar’s current winter camping requirements prohibit setting up camps within 500 metres of oil and gas pipelines, as well as government and service facilities.
Separate current camping rules also require camps to remain at least 750 metres from pumps, with authorities able to specify additional safety distances depending on the location and circumstances.
The Ministry of Interior said public awareness and compliance with safety requirements are essential to protecting people and critical infrastructure.
