The Old Doha Port and the Mina District attracted a lot of attention and love before and during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Thousands of people flocked to the area to catch a glimpse of cruise ships docked there and enjoy the vast open outdoor spaces.

There had been some questions as to how the area would be used after the end of the FIFA World Cup. Presently, it is set to feature the third edition of the Qatar Balloon Festival, which will kick off on Thursday, January 19.

Even after the Qatar Balloon Festival ends, people in the country can look forward to more events and activations throughout the year, said Old Doha Port Executive Director Engr. Mohammed Abdulla Al Mulla.

“What we’re promising the audience, people in Qatar and visitors, is that this (Qatar Balloon Festival) will be hopefully the first-of-its-kind event to be hosted in Old Doha Port. However, we’re also planning such festivals in the Doha Port in the future,” he told The Peninsula.

Authorities are expected to announce events that will deal mostly with maritime activities, including a traditional dhow competition, soon.

The Old Doha Port, after its inauguration ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, had quickly transformed into one of the country’s most important tourist attractions.

With the launch of the 2022-23 cruise season, many ships have also been anchoring at the Doha Port. The season is expected to see 58 cruise liners arrive in Doha.
