OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Sol, a new model designed for complex coding, computer use and professional tasks, with performance approaching the company's flagship GPT-6 Astra model.
The model, released on September 29, improves on GPT-6 Sol across programming, debugging and multi-step workflows. It is also designed for agentic tasks, allowing AI agents to plan and execute work using tools rather than only generating code or text suggestions.
OpenAI reported improvements in factual accuracy on a set of deliberately challenging prompts. At low reasoning effort, the share of responses containing at least one factual error fell to 7.7 percent with GPT-6.1 Sol, compared with 11.4 percent for GPT-6 Sol.
The company said GPT-6.1 Sol also performs closer to GPT-6 Astra across several complex-work evaluations while offering a lower-cost option for users who do not require the capabilities of its most powerful model.
OpenAI also highlighted improvements in how GPT-6.1 Sol handles user instructions and safety constraints. The company's evaluations found that the model was more reliable at following explicit restrictions, communicating limitations and avoiding actions outside the scope authorised by the user.
GPT-6.1 Sol is rolling out in ChatGPT Work and Codex for eligible Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users. It is also available through the OpenAI API under the model ID gpt-6.1-sol. The model has not been added as a standard option in regular ChatGPT conversations across all plans and interfaces.
