With the kick-off of the new academic year in Qatar, more than 315,000 students have returned to schools across the country, His Excellency the Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Mohamed bin Abdulwahed Al Hammadi announced yesterday. 

These include students of public and private schools as well as kindergartens in Qatar.

Of these 115,000 students were enrolled at 208 government schools and 68 kindergartens, and around 200,000 were registered at 310 private schools and kindergartens. 

Senior officials at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) toured various schools on Sunday morning to make certain that all arrangements were in place for the new school year 2019-2020.

According to the officials, the attendance of students on the first day was quite good. They also noted that the schools are all set for a successful new academic year. 

HE Dr Al Hammadi acknowledged the support of several government departments toward education in the country, speaking at a press conference held at the Ministry yesterday. 

The event highlighted some of the Ministry's efforts and achievements, in that five new government schools began operations this year with a capacity for 3,158 students. 

Additionally, two new schools of Al Hedayah group for students with special needs were opened this year at Al Hilal and Al Sukhamah Areas. 

As many as 25 new private schools have opened in the country with at least 15,000 seats.

The number of schools under the educational coupons system for Qataris has touched 99, benefiting more than 20,000 students.

HE Al Hammadi further said that there are now 29 higher education institutes in Qatar compared to 16 five years ago.

In addition to Qatar University, there are private institutes from the UK, France, Spain, the US, Canada and others that offer quality higher education. 

According to HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education efforts are underway to attract an institute of higher education each from Asia, the Arab world and Germany to begin operations in Qatar.

HE Al Hammadi said at least 4,796 Qatari students are on scholarships within the country as well as abroad, at a cost of over QR860mn annually. The scholarships are provided according to the requirement of specialists and the labor market in Qatar. 

There is currently one technical school in Qatar and it is to be examined if more are required.

He said the educational strategy for 2017-2022 focuses on the quality of education and its products and involves a range of programs that also look at diversifying education for adults, as well as people with special needs.
