Qatar Basketball Team Prepares for Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Opener Against Iran

Qatar's men's basketball team is continuing preparations for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, with the national side looking to make a strong start in one of Asia's major multi-sport events.

The Games will officially take place in Japan from September 19 to October 4, although the men's 5x5 basketball competition begins earlier in Nagoya.

Qatar will open its Group B campaign against Iran on Thursday, September 10.

The national team will then face Jordan on Saturday, September 12, before completing the preliminary round against Chinese Taipei on Sunday, September 13.

Group B features Qatar, Iran, Jordan and Chinese Taipei. Group A includes Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, while Group C features China, the Philippines, Bahrain and Kazakhstan.

The knockout stages will begin after the preliminary round, with the quarter-finals scheduled for September 16. Should Qatar qualify, its quarter-final would take place at 4:00 am Doha time.

The semi-finals are scheduled for September 18, while the bronze-medal game and final will take place on September 20, followed by the medal ceremony.

Qatar enters the competition with a notable history in Asian basketball. The national team made its first appearance at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Japan in 2006.

At continental level, Qatar won bronze medals at the FIBA Asia Championship in both 2003 and 2005.

The national team also won the Asian Challenge Cup in 2004, adding a continental title to its record, while also achieving a number of successes in Gulf and West Asian competitions.
