Qatar Charity today inaugurated a new humanitarian bridge from the State of Qatar to the Republic of Sudan, with 50 truckloads of medicines and essential medical supplies, in cooperation with Qatar Fund for Development, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Aspetar Hospital, in an urgent response to the worsening health crisis due to the ongoing armed conflict in the country.
The inauguration event was held at the headquarters of the Gulf Warehousing Company (GWC) in Doha, in the presence of His Excellency Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Sada, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Sudan, His Excellency Mr. Badr Al-Din Abdullah, Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to Qatar, Mr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Kuwari, CEO of Qatar Charity, and representatives of partners in the health and relief sectors.
The humanitarian bridge aims to fill the acute shortage of medical supplies and essential medicines to support existing health facilities in Sudan and enhance their capacity to provide therapeutic services, with Qatar Charity managing the operational and logistical aspects of transporting aid shipments provided by partners.
The move of this bridge comes in light of the difficult humanitarian and health conditions that Sudan is going through, as the World Health Organization estimates that more than a third of the country's health facilities are out of service, while more than 20 million people are in need of urgent health assistance, at a time when about 21 million people are facing severe food shortages out of 33.7 million people in need of humanitarian assistance this year.
It is noteworthy that the inauguration of the Humanitarian Bridge comes as an extension of the health and relief program implemented by Qatar Charity in Sudan for the year 2026, which included organizing surgical camps specialized in catheterization and cardiology, cochlear implants, and cataract treatment at a cost of more than 1.3 million Qatari riyals.
The total cost of humanitarian projects and interventions implemented by Qatar Charity in Sudan during the current year amounted to about QR 17 million to date, not counting the total cost of the humanitarian bridge inaugurated today.
