Reflecting its willingness to always be one of the first to offer a helping hand to other countries affected by natural disasters and other critical challenges, Qatar has pledged a $5 million contribution toward the rebuilding of earthquake-hit areas in the Republic of Albania.

The donation, which adds to Qatar’s humanitarian efforts, seeks to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the earthquake.

This came during a speech delivered by Assistant to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater, at the international donors’ conference, “Together for Albania,” held earlier this week.

“Driven by the State of Qatar’s keenness to continue fulfilling its humanitarian obligations towards the international community, I am pleased to announce that the State of Qatar has provided an amount of $5 million to contribute to the reconstruction of the earthquake-affected areas in the Republic of Albania and to alleviate the serious humanitarian consequences of the damage caused by this earthquake,” she stated.

The conference was organized by the European Union (EU) to combine efforts in rebuilding parts of Albania after the earthquake that struck the country in November 2019.

The Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama, European Council President Charles Michel and other top officials joined the event.

HE Al Khater acknowledged the tremendous efforts of the EU in hosting the conference as well as its support extended toward the Albanian people as they deal with the aftermath of the natural disaster.

Referring to the strong participation at the conference, HE Al Khater appreciated the remarkable support from various countries and regional and international organizations toward Albania and its people. She said the participation reflected the fulfillment of their moral and humanitarian obligations.

Earlier, Qatar had also announced its plans to send eight Qatar Airways planes to China, containing medical aid to support the country’s efforts to control the coronavirus outbreak.
