Qatar has never shied away from providing humanitarian aid and assistance to people who’re in bad need of support. They have proved it time and again, be it during the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria or the civil war in Sudan.

In the latest show of Qatar’s generosity, its Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani promised $100m as humanitarian aid for Ukraine on Friday.

Sheikh Mohammed, who met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, extended all help to the war-torn country.

Zelensky welcomed Sheikh Mohammed, the first Qatari official to visit Ukraine, to Kyiv. He thanked the nation for providing them with the generous aid.

“We appreciate this visit and consider it an important manifestation of Qatar’s support and solidarity with our country. We’re sincerely grateful for all the assistance we’ve received from Qatar,” Zelenskyy said.

The $100m aid will be used to support health, education and demining, said Shmyhal earlier in the day.

“This money will be channelled for reconstruction in the health and education sectors, humanitarian de-mining, and other important social and humanitarian projects,” Shmyhal told a joint briefing.

Shmyhal said they discussed Ukraine’s peace formula — a 10-point peace plan that calls for nuclear, energy, and food security, restoration of borders, and others.

Shmyhal thanked Qatar for its readiness to mediate in efforts to repatriate thousands of Ukrainian children taken to Russia since Moscow’s invasion.

Sheikh Mohammed also discussed with Zelensky further steps to ensure global food security and continue the safe functioning of the grain corridor.

Zelensky also emphasized the opportunities for Qatari investment funds and business circles to participate in the implementation of specific programmes for the development and restoration of Ukraine.
