Qatar and India have enjoyed a very warm relationship over the past many decades. The two nations have taken care to strengthen their bond with regular state visits by leaders of either countries.

India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who was in Qatar on a two-day visit, met Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani yesterday, reported Gulf Times.

The two leaders discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations and also developments related to the ongoing Gulf crisis, Kuwaiti mediation efforts, as well as a number of other regional and international issues.

Sushma Swaraj said the two countries were keen to further increase cooperation in unexplored areas.

“The relations between Qatar and India are very old and historic. It has strengthened further recently, especially after the illegal blockade imposed on Qatar,” she was quoted as saying by The Peninsula, during an interactive session with members of the Indian community.

“India is counted among the countries who’ve stood with Qatar during the blockade and this has been recognised by the country’s leadership. Qatar’s leaders are very keen on a strategic partnership and high-level engagement with India. Qatar wants to explore opportunities for cooperation in the areas which are not explored so far,” she added.

Following the meeting between the two leaders, a joint declaration was signed to establish a Joint Commission between the Governments Qatar and India. The Commission will be headed by Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the two countries respectively, according to Qatar Tribune.

The joint commission will work to improve co-operation in the fields of economy, commerce, culture, science, technology, information technology and education.

It will also follow up implementation of agreements concluded between the two countries, find suitable solutions for resulting problems of implementation thereof, facilitate the exchange of information and expertise, and encourage bilateral consultation in service of cooperation between the two countries.
