Since 2015, Qatar, through the Qatar Fund for Development, has provided $100 million to UNRWA.
This year, the country’s support amounts to a total of $11.2 million, HE Al Muraikhi mentioned. The support comes under a Qatar-UNRWA agreement inked in December 2019 on the sidelines of the Doha Forum.
This is in addition to $1.5 million that Qatar’s Education Above All Foundation offered to the Palestinian government to support the education of children in Palestine.
The Minister further underlined that Qatar is the first in the Arab world in providing support to UNRWA’s core resources for 2019-2020.
The conference is held to address the financial crisis facing UNRWA, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic that has increased the pressure on the agency’s works, HE Al Muraikhi said.
Moreover, he once again affirmed Qatar’s support for the efforts of the new Commissioner-General of UNRWA and thanked UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for his efforts to mobilize support for the agency.
HE the Minister also thanked Jordan and Sweden for organizing the conference.
