Qatar, although abundantly blessed with hydrocarbons, is keen to promote a green way of moving around.
The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) launched the country’s first-ever electric car charging station project (Phase 1) yesterday, reported Gulf Times.
The project, which is a part of its ambitious ‘Green Car Initiative,’ is situated at Al Thumama. The aim of the Initiative is to make 10% of all vehicles in Qatar run by green energy within the next 10 years.
The electric car charging station at Kahramaa Awareness Park (KAP) is the first of nine such stations to come up around the country.
Once completed, the nine stations will be located at KAP, Kahramaa Headquarters, Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The St. Regis Doha, Al Fardan Towers, Qatar Foundation Headquarters, Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), Msheireb Downtown Doha, and Ezdan Mall Al Wakra, reported The Peninsula.
Inaugurating the recharging station, Kahramaa President Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari said the initiative is part of Qatar’s commitment to environment and a healthier life for future generations.
“The initiative is launched with the support of different government entities. A bigger campaign will begin soon to create awareness about zero carbon emission cars. A new law will be introduced to promote zero carbon emission fleets and special incentives such as special parking facility will be offered to green car customers,”Al Kuwari was quoted as saying by Qatar Tribune,
The Phase 1 of the project is a collaboration between Tarsheed programme, Siemens Qatar, and Alfardan Group, under which the Alfardan Real Estate Group will be providing three electric car charging stations at some of its most prominent properties.
An exhibition displaying different electric and hybrid cars is also being held at the KAP. The exhibition will continue for the next three days and is open from 9am to 1pm.
