Qatar Participates In 11th Belt And Road Summit In Hong Kong

Qatar participated in the 11th Belt and Road Summit in Hong Kong, held under the theme Advancing High-Quality Development: Embarking on a New Journey.

The State of Qatar was represented by HE Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Sayed, Minister of State for Foreign Trade at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The summit was opened by John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, in the presence of senior officials and representatives of regional and international organisations.

Speaking during a policy dialogue session, Al-Sayed described the summit as an important platform for strengthening dialogue, expanding co-operation and building economic partnerships that can keep pace with global change.

He highlighted the importance of developing economic and trade relations between Qatar and Hong Kong, noting Hong Kong's role as a global hub for trade, investment, financial services and logistics, as well as its potential to strengthen Qatar's links with Asian markets. He said trade between Qatar and Hong Kong amounted to approximately USD 1.7 billion over the past four years and noted that many Hong Kong companies operate in the Qatari market.

Al-Sayed called for wider trade co-operation through the reciprocal organisation and participation in trade exhibitions and markets. He said such initiatives could promote national products and create new opportunities for their access to Asian markets.

He also invited Hong Kong companies to benefit from Qatar's competitive economic and investment environment, including the services and incentives offered by its free zones, to establish partnerships across sectors serving the Qatari market and providing access to other regional markets.

On the sidelines of the summit, Al-Sayed held meetings with John Lee; Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of Hong Kong; Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of Hong Kong; Jam Kamal Khan, Federal Minister for Commerce of Pakistan; Khandker Abdul Muktadir, Minister of Commerce, Industry, Textiles and Jute of Bangladesh; Wasantha Samarasinghe, Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Co-operative Development of Sri Lanka; and Dr Kirida Bhaopichitr, Vice Minister of Commerce of Thailand.

The meetings examined opportunities for co-operation in various fields and ways to strengthen economic, trade and investment partnerships between Qatar and the participating countries and jurisdictions.
