Qatar is participating in the Second International Conference on Combating Discrimination Against Islam and Muslims, which began at the headquarters of the League of Arab States in Cairo.

The two-day conference is being held under the theme "Islamophobia: Concept and Practice in Light of Current Global Conditions".

Qatar is represented by Dr Youssef Al Siddiqi, a Board Member of the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue, and Aamna Abdulrahman Al Sulaiti of Qatar’s Permanent Delegation to the League of Arab States.

The conference discusses the role of religious institutions and Islamic centres in promoting moderate religious discourse, as well as national, regional and international practices for combating hate speech.

Other topics include the role of educational institutions in promoting tolerance and acceptance, the contribution of civil society organisations to combating discrimination, and the empowerment of young people to spread a culture of coexistence and mutual respect.

The programme also includes the first meeting of the Permanent Multi-Stakeholder Institutional Platform for Combating Discrimination Against Islam and Muslims.

The platform aims to strengthen coordination between regional and international institutions and transform the recommendations of the first conference into practical programmes and initiatives.

Speaking to Qatar News Agency, Dr Al Siddiqi said the conference provides an important opportunity for direct dialogue, mutual understanding and the correction of misconceptions about Islam and Muslims.

He highlighted the importance of presenting an accurate understanding of Islam to European and other societies, particularly amid the rapid development of technology and social media.

Dr Al Siddiqi also noted the role of the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue in organising regular conferences that promote dialogue between followers of different religions and evaluate experiences in this field.

The conference follows the recommendations of the first international conference on combating hatred against Islam, organised through cooperation between the League of Arab States and the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
