Qatar has been giving its all to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
The country has been successfully running its National COVID-19 Vaccination Program since December 2020.
As of Sunday, March 21, 2021, 18.2 percent of the adult population (16 years and above) in Qatar had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), in its weekly update, stated that one in six adults in the country has gotten at least one shot of the vaccine.
However, despite the country’s best efforts new variants of the virus have made their way to the country leading to an increase in the number of daily COVID-19 cases.
In a MoPH conference on Wednesday, officials urged everyone to play their role in complying with the preventive and precautionary measures to safeguard themselves and those around them from the risk of contracting COVID-19.
During the press conference, chair of the National Health Strategic Group on COVID-19 and head of Infectious Diseases at Hamad Medical Corporation, Dr Abdullatif Al Khal highlighted that the Ministry has been making efforts to accelerate the pace of the vaccination program.
The number of COVID-19 vaccination per week is expected to go up to 180,000 – 200,000 doses, he mentioned.
More than 650,000 doses of the vaccine have been administered and over 20,000 people receive the vaccine daily, the senior official said.

He also said that over 200,000 people in the country have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, approved in Qatar, are effective against the new strains of the virus, Dr Al Khal confirmed.
He said that the number of infections among the groups that have been vaccinated has gone down. This shows the effectiveness of the vaccines that have efficacy levels of over 90 percent until now.
Earlier this week, Qatar announced the reimposition of additional restrictions to limit the spread of COVID-19. For more details, click here.
