The Shura Council concluded its participation in the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the 218th session of the Governing Council and their related meetings in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania. The meetings brought together speakers of parliament and parliamentary delegations from around the world.
The Shura Council delegation was led by HE Dr Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, Deputy Speaker of the Council and Vice-President of the IPU Executive Committee, representing the Arab Group on the Committee. The delegation participated in discussions under the theme “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all,” alongside deliberations on parliamentary and international issues including inclusive social development and the promotion and empowerment of the rights of persons with disabilities.
The Shura Council was also represented by HE Eng Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi at the conference of the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement. At the conclusion of the session, Milton Dick, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Australia, was elected President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union for the 2026–2029 term, succeeding Dr Tulia Ackson.
The Assembly concluded with the Arusha Communiqué, which stressed the importance of strengthening good governance, upholding transparency and accountability, expanding community participation in decision-making, and building trust between communities and public institutions. It also called for the empowerment of women, young people and persons with disabilities, the responsible use of modern technologies and artificial intelligence, and stronger parliamentary cooperation to address shared challenges.
The Assembly's closing session was held after the conclusion of the Governing Council meetings, which discussed ways to strengthen the role of parliaments in supporting good governance and sustainable development and addressing shared challenges.
