The slaying of outspoken Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the country’s consulate in Turkey has sent shockwaves throughout the world.

After initially denying the journalist’s death, Saudi Arabia was forced to admit that he had indeed died and that 18 people had been arrested in relation to the murder. A number of top Saudi Arabian officials were also removed from their respective positions.

Qatar, which so far had not officially made a comment on the murder, has now said the shocking incident should act as a wake-up call, according to Gulf Times.

HE Lolwah Al Khater, the Spokesperson of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said her country had faith in the Turkish probe into the death of the Washington Post contributor.

She was speaking at the Chatham House during an event organised by the London-based think-tank — The Royal Institute for International Affairs.

When asked whether relations between Qatar and Saudi Arabia had changed in the wake of the murder, she replied in the negative.

“I don't think anything has changed dramatically. We’re just hoping there’s a wake-up call for everyone. And of course, our condolences go to the family and friends of the journalist,” she said.

Al Khater, who was speaking during a discussion entitled ‘Qatar’s foreign policy: balancing new alliances in a contested region,’ felt European countries were doing everything possible to put pressure on Saudi Arabian authorities to punish the criminals.

“There was a joint statement that the UK, France and Germany issued. I think this statement, for the time being, summarises all the actions that everyone wants to see,” she said.

The three nations had demanded that Saudi Arabia should clarify how Khashoggi died and that its account must be “backed by facts to be considered credible.”

“We would like to see a transparent investigation. We’ve faith in the legal system in Turkey and I guess everyone is anxiously waiting to hear what’s going to be announced (today),” Al Khater was quoted as saying by Qatar Tribune.
