In yet another prestigious honor for Qatar, His Excellency Special Envoy to the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs for Counterterrorism and Mediation in Conflict Resolution has been presented with the 2020 Best Negotiator Award by the United Nations.
Dr Mutlaq bin Majed Al Qahtani received the honor in recognition of his role and efforts in peacemaking and settling disputes in the region and around the world.
The Qatari official expressed his gratitude and pride in becoming the recipient of the esteemed accolade.
HE Dr Al Qahtani recognized the support from Qatar’s wise leadership and the working group and noted that the award adds to Qatar’s successes in the area of mediation and conflict resolution.

He highlighted the issue of cultural sensitivity in mediation and negotiation, saying that since cultural rules are not written it is often challenging to understand them.
He also shed light on the difference in perceptions and understanding of the disagreement, emphasizing the significance of making efforts to understand acceptable and not-acceptable behaviors.
Furthermore, HE spoke about the training of mediators and negotiators and said this should take into account various cultural concepts.
He also called for embracing methods and skills in mediation, advising those who want to be culturally competent mediators or negotiators to remain patient, vigilant, open in their thinking, exercise flexibility and be self-aware and curious.
