The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) is developing a nursery that will be in charge of growing all the turf as well as trees (for surrounding areas) used for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The SC took an important step forward when it opened the Tree Nursery in the Umm Salal area yesterday, reported Gulf Times.
HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi inaugurated the first-of-its-kind environmental facility, spread over an area of more than 880,000sqm (equal to the size of Aspire Park).
“This is a very important project for green areas around all the stadiums that we’re going to build. We consider it as a very important investment from our side for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and for the future,” he was quoted as saying by Gulf Times.
He was joined by SC Secretary General Hassan Al Thawadi and Public Works Authority (Ashghal) president Dr Saad bin Ahmed Al Mohannadi.
The SC’s Tree Nursery will also produce more than 1.2m square metres of landscape grass (also known as Summer Grass) annually, making it the biggest landscape turf farm in the world. This grass will be harvested two or three times per year, reported Gulf Times in another report.
The Nursery currently houses over 16,000 trees and 679,000 shrubs. The entire facility will be irrigated using recycled water, reported The Peninsula.
The nursery aims to plant 46 different species of trees as well as thousands of shrubs for 2022 World Cup scenery. The trees, a mixture of local and other varieties, have been imported from China, Spain and Thailand, according to Qatar Tribune.
