Two high-speed trains collide in Spain, Madrid-Andalusia line suspended

Two high-speed trains have collided in central Spain, prompting authorities to suspend rail traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line.

Spanish rail infrastructure operator Adif said the collision occurred on Wednesday morning, October 28, in Toledo province.

The incident involved a Renfe high-speed train and an Iryo train operating on the Madrid-Seville route.

Emergency response underway

The collision occurred shortly after 9am local time.

Initial reports said two carriages from the Iryo train derailed following the crash, with emergency medical teams and other responders deployed to the scene.

Local authorities said the number and severity of injuries were still being assessed.

The cause of the accident has not yet been established.

Madrid-Andalusia services suspended

Adif suspended high-speed traffic between Madrid and Andalusia following the collision.

The disruption affects one of Spain’s major high-speed rail corridors, connecting the capital with southern destinations including Seville.

Authorities have not yet announced when services are expected to resume.

What is known so far?

The crash took place in the area between Mora, Orgaz and Urda in Toledo province.

Early reporting identified the two services as a Renfe high-speed train and an Iryo train, with one operating from Madrid towards Seville.

Emergency services remain at the scene and further information on casualties, passengers affected and the cause of the collision is expected as the response continues.

This is a developing story.
