UN reaffirms continued support for Somalia after the expiration of its mandate on 31 October

The expiration of the mandate of the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNAMA) at the end of this month marks the end of more than three decades of UN missions that have supported peace, nation-building, governance and reconciliation in the country, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General.

In a press release, Dujarric said that on October 31, the United Nations Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) will conclude its two-year transition phase and cease operations, in accordance with Security Council resolutions 2753 (2024) and 2809 (2025), and in response to the request of the Federal Government of Somalia.

In accordance with the transitional road map agreed jointly between the Somali Government and the United Nations, the mandate of the Mission has been transferred to Somali institutions, United Nations agencies, funds and programmes, reflecting Somalia's commitment to strengthening national ownership of its peacebuilding and nation-building agenda.

The UN Secretary-General praised the progress made over the past decades towards consolidating peace and security in Somalia, praised the determination and resilience of the Somali people in the face of daunting challenges, and acknowledged the enormous efforts made in the country's journey from conflict to recovery.

Dujarric stressed that the United Nations will continue its support to Somalia through its agencies, funds and programmes working there, and in cooperation with the Somali authorities, the African Union and other international partners, to promote peace, stability, human rights and sustainable development.

The Secretary-General reiterated the UN's unwavering commitment to the Somali people and its support for Somali-led efforts to build a future of peace, stability and prosperity.
