Qatar Embassy issues US travel advisory for Qatari citizens

Qatar’s Embassy in Washington has issued a travel advisory reminding Qatari citizens heading to the United States of key entry, customs and legal requirements to observe during their visit.

The advisory covers entry under the US Visa Waiver Program, electronic-device inspections at the border, cash and food declarations, prescription medicines and compliance with local laws.

Qatari citizens can travel using ESTA

Eligible Qatari citizens can travel to the United States for tourism or business under the Visa Waiver Program using an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

The Visa Waiver Program allows eligible Qatari passport holders to stay in the United States for up to 90 days without obtaining a visitor visa.

Qatar officially joined the programme in November 2024.

Travellers who already hold valid US visas may continue using them where applicable.

The embassy stressed that having an ESTA approval or visa does not guarantee admission, as the final decision on entry rests with US border authorities.

Travellers should also ensure they do not remain in the country beyond the period authorised for their stay.

Electronic devices may be inspected

The embassy reminded travellers that US Customs and Border Protection may inspect passengers and their belongings at ports of entry.

This can include electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets.

Travellers are therefore advised to be aware of the content stored on their devices and comply with instructions from border authorities during inspection procedures.

Declare cash above $10,000

Travellers entering or leaving the United States must report currency and certain monetary instruments if their total value exceeds $10,000.

There is no general prohibition on carrying more than $10,000, but the amount must be properly declared to US authorities.

Failure to comply with declaration requirements can result in enforcement action, including possible seizure of funds.

Food and agricultural products must be declared

The embassy also reminded travellers to declare food and agricultural items when arriving in the United States.

This can include products such as:

  • meat and meat products;
  • fruit and vegetables;
  • seeds;
  • plants; and
  • other agricultural products.

Some items may be restricted or prohibited depending on their type and country of origin.

Carry medicines in original packaging

Travellers carrying prescription medicines are advised to keep them in their original packaging.

The embassy recommends carrying a valid prescription and supporting medical documentation where appropriate, particularly for medicines that may be subject to additional restrictions.

Follow traffic and local laws

The advisory also urges Qatari citizens to cooperate with law-enforcement and federal authorities and to follow US federal, state and local regulations throughout their stay.

Particular attention should be paid to traffic laws, as requirements and penalties can vary between states.

Qatari citizens travelling to the United States are advised to review the latest guidance published by the Embassy of Qatar in Washington before departure.
