The US Embassy in Qatar implemented a shelter-in-place for all personnel, recommending that all of ‌its citizens to do the same until further notice.

“The US Embassy in Qatar is implementing a shelter-in-place for all personnel. We recommend all Americans do the same until further notice,” wrote the US Embassy in Qatar on its Instagram handle.

“Find a secure location within your residence or another safe building. Have a supply of food, water, medications, and other essential items. Avoid demonstrations, keep a low profile, and stay aware of your surroundings. Monitor local media for breaking news. Be prepared to adjust your plans.”

“Keep your phone charged and maintain communication with family and friends to inform them of your status. Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive the latest updates on security in Qatar,” it further said.

It also asked Americans in Qatar to dial 999 for emergency services before providing the US Embassy in Qatar's contact details.

The precautions followed loud explosions in Tehran, Iran, earlier in the day.

Al Jazeera, citing its correspondent on the ground, said explosions were heard in downtown Tehran, with smoke seen rising. Iran’s Fars Agency also reported that several missiles struck University Street and the Jomhouri area in Tehran.
