Adding to its existing range of some spectacular parks, Qatar is set to introduce the world’s first park with air-conditioned paths.

In an interview with Al Rayyan TV yesterday, an official from Qatar’s Public Works Authority, Ashghal, revealed that the Umm Al Seneem Park is the first project of its kind in the world.

Spanning over 130,000 square meters, the At Umm Al Seneem Park will feature 1,150 meter-long air-conditioned paths with walking, running, and cycling tracks.

"We completed this project after studies conducted since 2009, and the idea of air-conditioning came from the World Cup stadiums and then moved on to Katara Street," Public Projects Department Head Engineer Abdul Hakim Al Hashimi mentioned in the interview.

"We took all these studies and developed a new system, for which we obtained a patent,” he added.

The Ashghal official added that the authority is working together with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) to implement two other parks, of which Al Gharrafa Park will also feature air-conditioned paths.

Al Gharrafa Park will cover an area of 50,000 square meters while the Rawdat Al Khail will span over 140,000 square meters.

Each park will comprise dedicated play areas for children and have a 70 percent green area, in addition to parking lots from 115 to 375 each.

When asked by the presenter about the solar panels in the slides, the Ashghal official commented, “We have a high power and a low power system. The high power will work in the five months of summer, while the low power will only work for the rest of the year when the temperature is less than 40c. It’s 70 percent powered by solar energy, and we’re working on getting that number to 100 percent.”
