Qatar Fuel has been running a promotion to replace the country’s steel LPG cylinders with safer Shafaf cylinders for quite some time now.

It has been running several schemes to encourage people to exchange their old cylinders, the latest which was launched on May 15 this year.

The scheme, which helped customers avail a benefit of QR120 per cylinder, is set to end on August 15, reported The Peninsula.

Under the exchange scheme, consumers who still use their metal gas cylinders can return them and get a lightweight, transparent and safer cylinder for QR245, instead of the regular QR365. Thus a person will save QR120 on a new cylinder.

A senior Woqod official said that the company had no plans now to extend the promotion’s validity.

Woqod, who is the country’s only distributor of LPG cylinders, has been striving hard to phase-out metal cylinders from the market.

Although latest figures are not available, it is estimated that there were around 700,000 metal cylinders in circulation in Qatar. However, Woqod had managed to replace almost half of them by early 2017.

Shafaf cylinders are made from fiberglass and plastic composite materails, making their ultralight and safe. An empty cylinder weighs just 5kg, making it easy to handle.

The new cylinders are fire proof and do not explode under any circumstances. The new cylinders also have a facility to assess the remaining gas in the cylinder.
