The Holy month of Ramadan is not only a time for fasting and prayers, but it’s also a time to give to the needy around one’s community.

One way to do this is by giving the Zakat Al Fitr, a charitable donation of food that must be given before the Eid prayer, before the end of Ramadan. It is compulsory to do for every self-supporting adult Muslim who has food in excess of their needs, on behalf of themselves and their dependents.

Qatar’s Department of Zakat Affairs at the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs urged the public to pay Zakat Al Fitr for themselves and their dependents on time.

The department specified that the amount of Zakat Al Fitr for the month of Ramadan 1444 AH would be equivalent to QR15 and that it must be paid before the Eid Al Fitr prayer.

Saad Omran Al Kuwari, Director of Zakat Affairs Department, said the department determined the value of Zakat Al Fitr after assigning several specialists at the Zakat services section to study the prices of rice and calculate the average prices to determine the actual value of Zakat Al Fitr.

“The basic principle of Zakat Al Fitr is to take it out from most people’s food, which is rice, and the amount we determined was 2.5kg. People have the chance to pay it in cash instead, at a value of QR15,” he said.

The department has also provided a Zakat calculator by which people can easily calculate the amount they are obliged to pay.

Al Kuwari urged people to pay Zakat Al Fitr to the Zakat Affairs Department, the official government agency concerned with collecting Zakat in Qatar, so that they could deliver it to actual beneficiaries inside Qatar before the Eid Al Fitr prayers.

Interested people can pay Zakat Al Fitr through the offices of the Department of Zakat Affairs, or online here.
