Al Janoub Arena will host Qatar’s national basketball team against China on August 27 as part of the fourth window of the qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027.
The match will mark the official opening of Al Janoub Arena and provide an early test of the venue’s readiness to host World Cup matches, while giving fans an opportunity to experience the tournament atmosphere a year before it begins in Doha.
The transformation of Al Janoub Stadium into a specialised basketball arena represents a new use for the sports venue, combining its existing architectural identity with its new role in basketball and long-term sports development.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 will be the first edition hosted by an Arab country in the Middle East and North Africa and the first to take place entirely within a single city, allowing fans to attend multiple matches in one day.
Qatar will be looking to produce a strong performance against China after finishing the first phase of the Asian qualifiers second in Group D with 10 points, behind Lebanon.
The national team secured a place in the second phase despite already qualifying automatically for the World Cup as host nation.
Qatar will begin the next stage against China in Doha on August 27 before playing home-and-away fixtures against Japan and South Korea.
Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Al Buainain, General Manager of the Organising Committee for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, said the Qatar-China match represents an important milestone in preparations for the tournament.
He said the match will provide an opportunity to test Al Janoub Arena’s organisational and operational readiness, assess fan interaction with accompanying activities and strengthen the national team’s preparations against one of Asia’s leading teams.
The opening also forms part of efforts to make long-term use of major sporting venues and support the continued development of sports infrastructure in the country and the region.
